Group of Seven

What started as an A. Y. Jackson sky quickly snowballed into a full landscape.

Inspired by the Group of Seven’s impressionistic approach, this piece was all about the brushstrokes. Mark making can blur the boundaries of mediums.

Hoya Carnosa Half-Sleeve

One draping and curving vine flows from shoulder to elbow.

This piece is a full-colour approach to botanical illustration - thin, pen-like outlines and black hatching for structure and depth, brought to life by a realistic palette.

Composition and negative space make this piece feel organic and natural on the arm.

Carlton the Cardinal

Illustrative realism using colour and peppering texture provide this cardinal with life even with a black outline. From a distance this style reads as a realistic bird, while up-close the use of black provides structure, form and weight. Black peppering texture adds extra dimension to the colour fill.

The spoon provides contrast and interest to the design - the cool palette as well as the realistic (no black outline) rendering juxtapose the warm and illustrative elements of the cardinal.

Turnip the Goldfinch

Illustrative realism lends itself nicely to the texture of birds. Like Carlton the cardinal, this piece uses a combination of black lines and peppering (dotted texture), along with colour to create depth, detail and structure.

Fisherman’s Sleeve

This black and grey patchwork (collection of individual/independent pieces) sleeve features a variety of subjects in a shared theme and style.

The shading is high contrast, and the designs have solid outlines.

The composition varies in regards to spacing between pieces. Some pieces touch and overlap, while others stand alone. The small perch fry above the elbow ditch was one of the final filler pieces of this project, used to break up a chunk of negative space. Even though it is one of the smallest pieces of the sleeve it is a focal point, aside from being centered in this photo, the high contrast shading and negative space around it draw us in so that we pause and rest along with it under the lily pad.

Art Nouveau Mother and Child

Crisp and clean lines inspired by Art Nouveau designs. This calf piece has very minimal shading to keep the focus on the linework.

Overgrown Bell Jar

This literary-inspired black and grey illustration combine different styles of texture, shading and fill. The ivy uses hatching, the book and leaves in the jar have both smooth grey fill and peppering, and the peony uses thin soft grey lines for depth and detail in the petals.

Deconstructed Lilac

Classic botanical illustration. Thin lines. Clean and orderly hatching. Minimal. Black.

Timeless.

Raspberry Fairy

Whimsy, magic, innocence and bounty. Black and grey illustration with depth, and just a hint of colour.

This piece has that classic storybook feel.

Western Thigh Piece

The request was for a western feeling thigh piece that included a cow skull a Clydesdale horseshoe (just out of frame at the bottom left), and a botanical/floral element, mostly black and grey, with just a hint of colour.

Using a restricted palette - in this case only washes of greens and oranges - is a subtle way to add colour to a design, paired with the black and grey peppering texture it creates a soft feeling despite the use of heavy outlines.

Lilac Chickadee

This is a delicate approach to illustration. It leans towards realism, using weighted and unfinished outlines in the leaves to create depth. The heaviest use of black is in the foreground, and as we move behind the bird the black transitions to tones of greys to dissipate back into the skin.
